4 Fonts sakeOfficially established in 2007 and named after one of our bravest patients, the PHOENIX MEMORIAL RESCUE CENTRE offers asafe haven to all handicapped, maimed, disabled and terminally ill small primates, exotic animals and wildlife on a temporary and permanent basis.Larger animals or those suffering from infectious diseases thatcannot be accommodated at our centre are referred to moresuitable establishments within our network of qualified contacts.24 Hour personal attention and nursing ensure that our patients experience safety, dignity, comfort and a pain free life for as long as they are with us. For this reason, we limit the amounts ofpatients in our care at any given time. All patients are regularly monitored by a qualified veterinarian, one of the best in the field of ExoticAnimal Medicine in South Africa. Specialised diets are catered for and disabled or handicappedanimals are accommodated with appropriate furnishings according to their physical limitations. When suitable, healthy animals are housed in outdoor cages whilst the severely disabled orterminally ill are kept in the comforts of our own home.Post-operative and rehabilitative care is also available for patients whose owners are work and time constrained.Boarding facilities are occasionally available depending on species and cage requirements. Again, numbers of boarders are strictly controlled. Before admission, owners of guest animals are required to produce a Veterinary certificate declaring the animal free of infectious diseases. For working owners, a shuttle service between our centre and a veterinary hospital can also bearranged. This service is only for medical cases only.We also specialize in the hand-rearing of various species of animals.EXOTIC PRIMATESOur main focus lies in the care of smaller exotic primates such as tamarins, marmosets, squirrelmonkeys and capuchins. Healthy specimens are referred to other facilities and ‘foster homes’,unless owner-donors insist that the animals stay with us. We offer a 24-hour telephonic advisory service covering all aspects of care particularly formarmosets and tamarins and are currently in the process of producing a book on this subject inconjunction with our veterinary expert. Our own range of products, sold under the ‘FUNKY MUNKY’ label and distributed by Reptile Resort Wholesale includes monkey hammocks, blankets, baby monkey starter kits and monkey porridge and treats. A portion of the sales of these products is used to finance our operation.OTHER EXOTICSExotic reptiles and animals are always welcome providing they fall within our mandate. Again weprefer to concentrate on the sick and handicapped and with an owner-donor’s permission, prefer to foster a healthy animal to a suitable home. In such a case, the animal remains our property. Should the foster home no longer be able to keep the animal, it returns to us for re-homing.WILDLIFEWild animals admitted to our facility are afforded medical care where necessary andaccommodated until more suitable arrangements can be made for them. Our goal always is toreturn the animal to the wild as rapidly as possible and have contacts countrywide who can provide the specific care required by each species and who are more qualified to keep animals that may not be suitable candidates for release. We are an approved drop-off site for baboons, vervet monkeys, owls and other raptors and havehad the privilege of caring for buck, squirrels, various reptiles, birds, bush babies, meerkats, porcupines, hedgehogs and even small wild rodents throughout the years.DOMESTIC ANIMALSRegrettably we cannot accommodate dogs and cats but arrangements can be made for birds.VISITORSNo general public visits to our facility are allowed to avoid contamination and stress to our patients. Contact between humans and wild animals are also kept to an absolute minimum to preventimprinting. Owners may visit on a strict ‘appointment only’ basis. No children are allowed at thefacility.DONATIONSDonations are always welcome. We are constantly in need of cages; cage building materials;blankets or material to make blankets; wood for sleeping boxes and cage furnishings; basic medical equipment and medicines; toys, ropes, barrels, tyres, plants and vegetable seedlings for cageenrichment; food and water bowls; teff and hay for cage floors; heaters, electric heat pads, towels, etc. Most of all food, which is our biggest expense: fresh fruit and vegetables, frozen vegetables, powdered milk, baby cereals etc. Please contact us before you throw anything away!
